Abstract
The objective was to determine the knowledge about the classification of hospital waste in workers of an indigenous institution providing health services. A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was used, the sample was 97 individuals, to whom a structured survey was applied in person and with an interpreter of pre-Columbian languages; A univariate statistical analysis was performed. The study included 97 collaborators, with the majority being women (76.3%) and 70.1% over 31 years of age. 83.5% come from low socioeconomic strata, and the majority reside in urban areas. In terms of employment, 35.05% work in P&M in the public sector, with 44.32% having between six and ten years of experience. Regarding the classification of hospital waste, the majority showed good general knowledge, highlighting successes in the identification of waste generators (97.9%) and in the correct disposal of needles and biodegradable waste. However, there were deficiencies in the waste deactivation process (30.9% incorrect answers) and the management of oncological drugs (28.9%). Also, 22.7% are unaware that some waste is not recyclable. Despite these deficiencies, knowledge about the effects of inadequate waste management on health and the environment was high (99% and 95.9%, respectively). It is recommended to improve specific training in key areas for safe management of hospital waste.
