Self-esteem of Afro-descendant women in their daily life

Abstract
The present study aimed to demonstrate the influence of discrimination and racism on the self-esteem and self-perception of Afro-descendant women in Panama. The research is framed within a qualitative approach, with an exploratory ethnographic design, oriented towards understanding in depth the experiences and perceptions of the participants regarding this phenomenon. The sample was non-probabilistic by convenience, consisting of 14 Afro-descendant women. A questionnaire with open-ended questions, applied virtually, was used for data collection. The process was developed in three phases: topic selection and literature review, instrument development and application, and interpretation and analysis of the results. The findings indicated that, although the participants expressed a positive self-image and valued personal and physical attributes, they also recognized that racism and social stereotypes negatively influence their self-esteem. The majority agreed that they must strive harder to be valued in academic, work, and social spaces. Furthermore, a tension in ethnic self-identification and a shared perception that racism affects their emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, and development opportunities were evident.
