Abstract

Chemiluminescence is a phenomenon produced by a chemical reaction. The BlueStar is an essential technique in criminalistics to detect hidden biological evidence, such as body fluids, including blood, by emitting light in chemical reactions. In Panama, this tool is widely used by institutions such as the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMELCF) to locate evidence at crime scenes, especially in cases of homicides and assaults. This technique helps to reconstruct transfer patterns, such as spatter or dragging, essential to determine the dynamics of a crime. However, it can generate false positives with common chemicals, such as detergents or bleach, so findings must be confirmed with complementary tests, such as DNA analysis. Proper use of BlueStar requires trained personnel, as improper application can degrade evidence or affect the chain of custody. Although the results are preliminary, they guide investigations and strengthen judicial hypotheses. In rural or hard-to-reach areas, the method remains viable thanks to the training of forensic experts. In Panama, chemiluminescence is key to solving complex cases, supporting investigations and the judicial system with advanced technological tools.
