Abstract

Postpartum depression is a topic that is heard a lot nowadays, but there is little information about this problem in Panama. The purpose of this research was to analyze how the lack of knowledge about postpartum depression affects the mental health of mothers. The methodology applied was quantitative, with a non-experimental cross-sectional design, and the instrument used was a digital form survey. The most relevant findings indicated that the lack of information hinders the identification of the mental disorder of postpartum depression, thus negatively affecting the mother’s well-being and the maternal-filial bond. It was interpreted that lack of knowledge perpetuates the cycle of misinformation and generates suffering that not only impacts women, but also their families and society. It was concluded that the lack of information, together with the scarce awareness of this condition, favors the minimization of symptoms and, consequently, hinders or delays access to care by mental health professionals. It also affects the mother-child bond.
