Abstract
Analyzing the current situation in Panama, the country produces about half of its electricity by burning fossil fuel, an activity linked to the production of polluting gases, which requires more attention to the "Environmental Impact of Thermoelectric Generation in Panama". The more we grow economically, the more we depend on this type of production, even when we have a favorable water wealth, climate changes bend us to its use, the effects of droughts are increasingly constant, hydroelectric plants lower their production. What alternatives does Panama have to reduce the polluting effects of thermoelectric production? Here arises the need to raise awareness about the risks that Panama faces in the face of dependence and the increase in thermoelectric production towards a sustainable future, this leads us to reevaluate the control of the gas emission factor, improve the figure of the prosumer as part of Distributed generation and strengthen the studies of new renewable energies with stable firm power. Geothermal energy and its applications are an alternative, around the world they have become an effective option for the world's energy demand, Central American countries already have projects in use, Panama maintains favorable sources, but requires the creation of a regulatory framework on research and implementation, which establishes environmental protection standards, as well as determine the financial incentives necessary for investment in this technology. These measures give our society the opportunity to move towards a real decarbonization of our electricity matrix.
