Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of universal distribution, which is potentially disabling, as it affects small and medium-sized joints such as wrists, elbows, hands, knees, ankles and shoulders, as well as other organs of the body such as skin, eyes, heart, nervous system, lungs, blood and musculoskeletal apparatus. Thus, as the joint and periarticular tissues are affected causing a lot of pain and inflammation of the synovium; this will cause patients functional limitation due to the fitness qualities that are affected such as muscle strength and also resulting in decreased autonomy. For this reason, the aim of the present research is on physiotherapeutic intervention and treatments for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A literature review was carried out on physiotherapy in rheumatoid arthritis, where various treatments were found such as aquatic exercises, active resisted exercises which are also effective against pain; application of cold or heat, use of splints to help maintain postures and prevent deformities, massage therapy and manual therapy.
